Glenview, Illinois · Greg Kulak, owner · 1013 Harlem Ave

A haircut from a barber who learns your name.

102 of our 117 Google reviews are five stars. Greg has had this chair on Harlem Avenue long enough that regulars still remember the name over the door before his — and there has been a barbershop in this room since at least the 1960s. One of our customers has been coming that long.

The shop

A barbershop in Glenview's old post office.

Four chairs, a wall of framed pictures, a green marble counter and a front window that looks straight out at Harlem Avenue. No app, no kiosk, no queue system. There is a door, and we open it at half past eight — eight, on a Saturday.

Our building has stood on this corner since 1930, and the bronze plaque beside the door explains why it looks the way it does.

How a visit goes

Five things worth knowing before you push the door.

No appointment needed most days, and nothing to set up before you arrive.

01

Walk in, or take an appointment

Walk in any day we are open. We take appointments Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Saturday is walk-ins only, all day.

02

Four chairs, and barbers you can ask for

Greg owns the place and still works a chair. Kornel and Edyta are on the other two. You will not be handed to whoever is free — say a name when you call, or when you come in.

03

Scissor work, when scissor work is what it needs

Greg still cuts with scissors. One customer put it this way: “an excellent barber who works only with a scissors — I haven't seen that in years.” It is why people keep describing the same thing — a clean, unfussy cut that came out right the first time.

04

The hot lather neck shave

We have never advertised it and it is not on any menu. Ask when you sit down and you will get one. We do full shaves too.

05

Park free and be back out

There is a customer lot right behind us, free while you are in the chair, plus street parking on Harlem and bike racks on the sidewalk out front.

The chair

Cuts, shaves and beard work.

For men and boys. If you want something you do not see here, ask — most of what we do has never been written down.

You are probably about to think we are hiding something. We are not — we would just rather say it ourselves than leave a number on a page and forget to change it. Call (847) 724-6460 and ask. It takes about fifteen seconds and you get today's price.

Who cuts

Three barbers. Ask for one by name.

Some people feel awkward asking for one barber by name. Ours do it as a matter of course — one of Kornel's customers has been coming to him for years. Say who you want when you call, or when you walk in.

Is Greg's Barber Shop cash only?

Call us on (847) 724-6460 and we will tell you what we are taking that day. Cash is never a bad idea at an old-school barbershop.

There is a customer lot right behind the building, free while you are in the chair, plus street parking on Harlem Avenue and bike racks on the sidewalk out front.

Does Greg's cut children's hair?

Yes. Boys' and kids' haircuts are a regular part of our day, and we are well used to first haircuts.

Who are the barbers at Greg's?

Yes. Our entrance is wheelchair accessible, at street level on Harlem Avenue, with a flat sidewalk approach from the front and from the customer lot behind.

What is the building Greg's Barber Shop is in?
